About Me:

I'm 29, a Navy Officer in San Francisco bay area.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

I've been messing around with the Easy Star, and am currently on my second Cularis glider. Haven't yet automated anything, but I have put a camcorder in both of the planes before, and have a decent amount of aerial video.

Joel Venable commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Introducing the new better, cheaper APM 2.5+ kit (with power supply/sensor, enclosure, new GPS)
"Question regarding the power module:  I understand I need to disconnect JP1, but will the receiver still be powered from this module?  "

Joel Venable commented on Mauricio's blog post Aeromapper RTF UAV + APM2.5 + parachute system = easy landings!
"In a confined space I would think the parachute may also not be ideal due to lack of control for the landing.  Cool idea though."

"That's really cool!  Since I'm also a cyclist, it might finally convince me to get a GoPro.  "

Joel Venable commented on Ellison Chan's blog post Which Flight Controller Drives this Quad?
"The RC model was probably inspired by the movie.  The video was only uploaded two months ago."

Joel Venable commented on Ellison Chan's blog post Which Flight Controller Drives this Quad?
"IMHO, anything that large would need to be collective pitch to have any semblance of control. As the scale goes up, I don't think varying RPMs as a control method is fast enough any more.

Ellison,  that would be an awesome idea, but the props would…"

Joel Venable commented on Sam Kelly's blog post New product! The 3DR Radio Telemetry System
"Bradley, your RC controller won't be near either the 900 or the 433.  The issue comes in when you have a video transmitter on 900MHz, as I do.  Even so, the firmware is adjustable to where the frequency can be separated enough to not cause…"

Joel Venable commented on Jean-Louis Naudin's blog post Full autonomous slope soaring with the ThermoPilot v5.2
"Glad I stumbled on this thread.  I have plenty of experience with the Cularis, though I have none with Arduplane.  I'm on the list for the APM2 and have my MKIII chassis waiting to accept it.

Have you tried the thermal hunting capabilities with…"

Joel Venable commented on Sam Kelly's blog post New product! The 3DR Radio Telemetry System
"So as I understand it, I can operate this gear at 900 mhz concurrently with 900mhz (actually 910) video gear?  With no signal degradation for either, assuming proper separation of transmitters?"

"Welcome to the forum!  I definitely understand your perspective about starting from scratch, but it is a huge undertaking!  For me, there is much value in building on the work of others, as there are plenty of improvements and upgrades that could be…"

Joel Venable replied to Gerard Valade's discussion Tunigy 9x Firmware with Mavlink stack
"Who says we don't have an uplink?  Couldn't we use the raw data encoded into a PPM channel to send data to the APM?  It would require "translation" code in the APM firmware to accomplish this, but I'm seeing the bigger picture...

9x with FrSky…"

Joel Venable commented on Earl's blog post er9x TX with Ardupilot interface
"I wonder if it would be possible to use one of the PPM RC channels for uplink capability.  My hypothesis is that on an xbee setup, the downlink uses most of the bandwidth for realtime GPS position and attitude, etc.  The uplink is used mostly to…"

Hello DIYers...First, a little background, my rc hangar includes an EasyStar, Cularis, FunJet, and a 1.2m balsa warmliner.  I've done quite a few recorded videos, but I'm looking to get more into FPV.  I've also trolled the forums off and on here…
