About Me:

I like making things and solving problems. My other hobbies are motorcycle riding, photography, electronics, gaming and shooting.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

In the past I've had experience with radio control cars and also Arduino development. My goal is to build a hexacopter for photography and/or FPV utilizing the ArduPilot platform.

Luke Olson replied to Matt Johnson's discussion DJI S900 alternative??? in ArduCopter User Group
"A two pilot setup is great if you have two pilots. With only one pilot it can sometimes be useful to control the gimbal from the autopilot for completely autonomous flight.

Luke Olson replied to Matt Johnson's discussion DJI S900 alternative??? in ArduCopter User Group
"I don't think it's possible to use the DJI gimbal with the Pixhawk. There are other decent gimbal options though like the DYS BLG3SN. See the APM Copter wiki for gimbal controller options."

Luke Olson replied to Matt Johnson's discussion DJI S900 alternative??? in ArduCopter User Group
"The DJI S900 is available as a frame only kit for around $1,400 and can be used with other autopilots like the Pixhawk. Having said that there are other frames with similar capabilities like the Tarot T810 which is less expensive. I'm coming at this…"

Luke Olson commented on Andrew Rabbitt's blog post 1300kJ/kg Battery - from the Too-Good-to-be-True Newsdesk
"Two more things to add to this discussion, there are a bunch of videos on YouTube of users jump starting cars using hobby LiPo batteries so it's definitely in the realm of possibility even for the cheaper imported LiPo batteries.…"

Luke Olson commented on Andrew Rabbitt's blog post 1300kJ/kg Battery - from the Too-Good-to-be-True Newsdesk
"I think they're misrepresenting the specifications of the device to make it sound a lot more impressive than it really is. It's likely three cells at 2,000mAh each that can be used in parallel for charging USB devices (6,000mAh at 3.7 volts) or in…"

Luke Olson commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Texas drone bill clears use by police, not civlians
"Other way around. Federal laws trump state laws in the United States.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_Clause
The exemptions in this bill from Texas are there for when the FAA eventually allows UAV for commercial use."

Luke Olson commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Texas drone bill clears use by police, not civlians
"The original bill was quite alarming as it would have practically banned all recording of images and videos by civilians from a UAV. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about this bill (quite the opposite, I'm pissed) but given the politics and…"

Luke Olson commented on Yusuf Pirgali's blog post HD video for UAV's
"Tommy, that wireless H.264 video server is for standard definition video according to the specifications, not high definition video."

Luke Olson commented on Yusuf Pirgali's blog post HD video for UAV's

Luke Olson commented on Yusuf Pirgali's blog post HD video for UAV's
"Like others have pointed out there are limitations to what is physically possible, however there are long range, low latency, HD resolution video transmitters out there that could be used on a drone. Like I said in a previous comment, you get what…"

Luke Olson commented on Yusuf Pirgali's blog post HD video for UAV's
"Right now you get what you pay for with wireless HD video. In time the costs will come down and the performance will improve."

Luke Olson commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Man refuses to stop drone-spying on Seattle woman
"Why did they call the police? They should have called this guy!

On a more serious note, that's pretty messed up. Hopefully lawmakers don't have a knee jerk reaction."

Luke Olson replied to Simon m's discussion lipo battery
"If you're using the 3D Robotics quadcopter around 5,000 mAh is the upper limit, maybe less depending on your specific configuration. With a battery that heavy it would affect handling."

Luke Olson replied to Nicholas Ee's discussion How many AWG wire for approx 8x40A ESCs
"If you need to ask these questions you might be setting yourself up to get hurt or to hurt someone else. Usually folks who need that much power understand the basics of how to get it working safely because they have learned with smaller projects.…"
