Mike Downey commented on Patrick Egan's blog post FAA BVLOS Committee Formed
"I think that they should designate zones for hobbyists where they can legally fly BVLOS... If I want to go out in the country with no one around for miles, well away from airports and houses, why should that require a license?

The United states is…"

Mike Downey replied to Nathaniel Frosland's discussion Am I buying the correct FPV setup? in IRIS
"I think the older GoPro cameras has some issues with latency, but the Hero 3 camera seems quite stable to me. I dont have any noticeable lag on the analog output of mine. Unless you are doing fast flying where fractions of a second count, you should…"

Mike Downey replied to Kate's discussion GoPro with IRIS in IRIS
"The receiver inside iris has failsafe capability if it loses the signal. If you set the failsafe so that Iris will RTL on signal loss, you shouldn't lose it, even if the WIFI is turned on. My Iris didnt have this enabled by default, but now I can…"

Mike Downey commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Are drones restricted in your state? This map will show you.
"I think the irony is that most of this legislation was motivated to keep the federal government from "spying" on their own citizens and keeping the government from intruding on our freedoms. Instead it has the effect of the government reducing the…"

Mike Downey commented on Stefan Gofferje's blog post Flexible 3D-printing filament
"I have done some printing with Ninjaflex and some of the other flexible plastics. Its a challenge in 1.75mm, but its doable. I wound up making a guide tube between the knurled feed shaft and the entrance of my hot end to keep it from buckling. You…"

Mike Downey commented on Emlid's blog post NAVIO: high rate IMU on Raspberry Pi
"I have tinkered with the Pi enough to know that the power filtering on the board is not that good and it is easily subject to brownouts. I would have a VERY hard time trusting this an autopilot...

or am I way off base here?"

Mike Downey commented on R. D. Starwalt's blog post Guess what was seen at the NMAM in Muncie, IN?
"the AMA's recent change of heart regarding FPV and autonomous flight is the ONLY reason I renewed my membership this year after a 4 year hiatus. The AMA has always been a great organization, but the FAA had them scared to death of FPV and anything…"

Mike Downey commented on Trent at MyGeekShow's blog post Emergency Auto Landing - APM saves sUAV
"also, dont forget to use the telemetry logs when adding new equipment. For example, I had an issue when mounting my video Tx too close to the APM. There was enough RF energy to interfere with my magnetic heading sensor in the APM.

if you power on…"

Mike Downey commented on Trent at MyGeekShow's blog post Emergency Auto Landing - APM saves sUAV
"5.8 is definitely the way to go. you dont have to worry about harmonics, and the range on 600mw is more that adequate. Range is a battle that is won with antennas anyway. I highly recommend investing in some good circular polarized antennas...

My…"

Mike Downey commented on Euan Ramsay's blog post Maidened Y6 - what I looked for
"tuning P using the logs seems straightforward.... too low P value and the values will undershoot. too high, and they will overshoot or resonate around the desired value.

how about derivative and integral tuning using the accelerometer logs? I…"

Mike Downey replied to Udo's discussion FPV with IRIS? in IRIS
"you know there is a big null when that is pointed toward or away from you, right?

If you used the longer legs and a 90 degree SMA adapter, you could point he antenna down and eliminate the horizontal null points on the antenna. "
