Stephen Rayleigh replied to Christian Stallings's discussion APM / Pixhawk systems with COA aproval
"The Swift Radioplanes' Lynx UAS is running APM 2.6. It has COAs at Yavapai College and Northern Arizona University.

Stephen Rayleigh commented on Matthew's blog post Introducing the Lynx
"@Rob, Brandin, Hughes: payload survivability is a valid concern, and one that we are keenly interested in quantifying. The stress concentrations that we've seen thus far have been in the airframe and camera stabilizer, which we have diligently…"

"I don't know how much a Puma costs, but I'm sure we couldn't afford it! This is the Lynx, which we made ourselves. As a mapping platform, it's a dream to use. Flies for over an hour, and deep-stalls to land. "

"The first link was the one we were involved with. We took the torch from those guys, and they went back after we left. They're troopers, to be sure! Unforgettable experience, and I hope we can help again in the future. I am a member of…"

In the wake of the strongest typhoon in recorded history, Swift Radioplanes LLC of Prescott, AZ recently returned from the Philippines, where they created aerial maps of the extensive damage as part of an open-source project. Shortly before…

Stephen Rayleigh commented on Justin Martin's blog post Introducing the Albatross UAV project
"You should build one and see how it flies. Just hotwire it out of foam.
Forward swept wings are an interesting choice. I think you overestimate span-wise flow for such low Re. Why not just washout like everyone else?"

Stephen Rayleigh commented on Peter Bell's blog post $65,000 prize for anti-poaching UAV contest winner up for grabs
"The requirement to use 3G/4G is impractical, unrealistic, and unreliable. Automatic target identification is difficult and unnecessary. The first phase is in three months and there are no official rules. There are no published standards for written…"

Stephen Rayleigh replied to Graham Pollock's discussion Apm takeoff
"The Arduplane answer is no, because you can't do a radio calibration. Maybe a copter person can verify. But overall, you should be less trusting of untested autonomous systems. "

Stephen Rayleigh replied to Andrew Tridgell's discussion ArduPlane 2.73 released
"The L1 controller is one of the best things to happen to Ardupilot. I love it. My plane stays on the flight path, and guided is a perfect circle. Way to go!"

Stephen Rayleigh replied to Andrew Tridgell's discussion ArduPlane 2.73 released
"Tridge,

I had a couple of flyaways with 2.72. It happened when I restarted a mission. As you said, wings-level flyaway. I had to create a new mission and upload it before the plane would respond.

Thanks for the fix.  "

Yesterday, I couldn't get Mission Planner's Ctrl+F geotagger to work. I've used it many times before with no problem. No matter what log I loaded, it said that the log began and ended 05/09/13 5:00:00 PM, and consequently there were 0 matches to…

Stephen Rayleigh commented on Chris Anderson's blog post AUVSI: "There's nothing unmanned about unmanned systems". Huh?
"A person commented on my local paper's website saying that our industry is hiding behind the term UAS and demanded that the FAA and everyone else adopt the word Drone. Apparently we're not scary enough for her. "Drone" is popular, but misguided and…"

My APM 2.5+ won't connect on the 3DR radios or USB. For the past few days, I've noticed the HUD starting to twitch (+/-3 degrees) when the plane is sitting still. Today at the field, I had trouble getting a GPS lock (which has never happened- I have…

I crashed my quad today, and I was wondering if what happened was normal. I was flying my quad in stabilize, and I was flying it pretty fast. As I pulled back on the stick to stop it, I found that it wasn't responding to my commands. It kept…
