About Me:

Enthusiast for all things flying, and the best flying things are the ones you make yourself. I started building my first quadcopter in 2009 because it was just as expensive as a coaxial heli, I got to build it myself, and it was computer controlled. As a budding computer engineer I couldn't have found a better platform and project.

Tim O'Brien commented on Tim O'Brien's blog post ARM7 mini quad with xbee remote
"Hey Diego, I migrated that code from SVN to github if you're still interested: https://github.com/t413/remote_xbee for the remote and https://github.com/t413/os_copter for the flight controller. Hope it's still interesting!"

Someone reached out to me a few weeks ago to 'give a talk on drones.' I talked briefly about MEMS, ring-laser-gyros, and touched on social issues and how you can short circuit the conversation when you can own the tech and do it yourself.See the…

Tim O'Brien commented on Patrick Egan's blog post California Call To Action
"I'm actually against this. I don't want to see law enforcement using sUAS before we've added more paradigms of public benefit via drones than currently exist. Amazon Prime Air, vehicles doing scientific research, power line and pipeline inspection,…"

Hiking Sweeney Ridge on Thanksgiving morning was a perfect time for testing out my newly completed quadcopter. This spot in the mountains, 1200 feet over SFO and the Pacific ocean, seemed like a perfect place to test out my newly completed quadcopter…

Tim O'Brien commented on Stephen Rayleigh's blog post AUVSI Competition using ArduPilot
"Are you streaming the gopro's video back via an analog radio and doing computation on the ground station from that feed? What kind of hardware do you have on board (other than the autopilot)?"

"I'd love to see your competition paper! I was loosely part of the NC State ARC (just graduated) and I have a bunch of friends heading to MD for the comp. Good luck! Kick some piccolo ass please."

"Christopher: I get around 15 minutes on my 800mah battery, hovering just above half throttle. I should time it exactly, or add an automatic flight timer in software. I could even integrate the throttle and estimate power consumption. Hmm...

Tim O'Brien commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Help wanted: great photos for the front page of DIY Drones
"They may not fit into the products you sell but I think my photos show the promise of an open and educationally inclined community that can spur new projects. They're in focus at least. Mini ARM7 quad 1 and Mini ARM7 quad 2."

"Well, that depends. If you get the modules I've got, these, then you're good to about 300 feet. I recently fried one of mine, so borrowed these from a friend. My verdict: Get the ones my friend got (if you have the funds, I don't). They're rated for…"

"About my site: Yep. I chose tonight to upgrade the CMS (zenphoto). Not a good choice, on afterthought. I'm on my svn server fixing things. That page is up and running now. Now I'm fixing the ajax image browsing.

ArduPilot? I'm sure one could. My…"

Tim O'Brien commented on Tim O'Brien's blog post ARM7 mini quad with xbee remote
"Right. It's just a breadboarded older arduino (atmega 168). It's not fast enough to run the display I want (these) so I'm moving to an STM32 as soon as I can get a dev board (ordered it a few days ago). The remote has no back, and the small…"
