Building a sub-500 gram (< 1.1 pound) quadcopter

3689722054?profile=original

I wanted to build a lightweight quadcopter frame for some time, and I've eventually found time to do it. Hereby I summarize some aspects of the build that allowed me to save weight.

Note that this is a summary of the complete post in my blog.

I’ve chosen to build a very simple X frame for this build. The frame is made out of two square unidirectional carbon fiber tubes of 8mm x 8mm outer dimensions and 40cm (15.7 inches) length, crossing over each other and glued with epoxy glue at the center. A few bits of CF tube are added around the crossing point for rigidity. The overlapping tubes create an asymmetry that allows for overlapping props, thus enabling larger prop sizes than the frame would normally allow.

Power and motor leads often account for a significant factor of the All-up weight, especially if heavy gauge wiring and high current connectors are used. In this build I tried to shorten the lead length as much as possible, and get rid of all the connections, instead choosing to solder leads directly to the PCB. Removing the bullet connectors from the ESC and motor side alone gave a weight gain of 30 grams (1.05 oz). Removal of long leads from the PDB to the ESC gave an additional gain of 40 grams (1.4 oz).

I’ve drilled holes directly on the CF tube 19 mm (0.74 inch) apart, and used them to fix the motor. In addition, I’ve used a mix of steel and plastic screws to secure the motor. This combination shaves off a few grams from the build, without negatively affecting the frame vibrations.

3689722115?profile=original

With this reduction in weight a small battery should be enough to keep the aircraft on the air for quite some time. I’m using a 1550 mAh 2S battery, with a weight around 150 grams (5.3 oz). Further reduction could be achieved using a pair of 18850s in series.

I’m using plastic 10-inch props, which are overlapping a bit at the edges. These are really lightweight props, at the expense of being a bit flimsy. Still, I prefer them to a pair of heavy CF, as they have a much softer sound profile. I cannot measure the actual RPM, but from the sound of the quadcopter they are spinning at around 2000rpm when floating.

The frame weighs 483 grams (around 1.06 pounds) when measured at my kitchen scale. I don't expect this figure to be very precise, but it should be in the ballpark. I still have to remove the leads from two of the ESCs, so it should drop a bit more. A preliminary estimation by eCalc gives the hover time at around 15 min, which is quite satisfactory given the small battery. It's also interesting to note that around 80% of the weight of this quadcopter is drive weight. So with the current hardware (motors, ESCs, battery), I can't find any more ways to reduce weight on this one. Swapping the 2S cell for a lower capacity 3S should give 1-2 extra minutes of flight, according to eCalc.

PX4 Sapog and friends

30%203D%20printed%20enclosure.jpg?width=300Quite some time has passed since our last post on the topic, so it's time to make another one.

Sapog

For those uninitiated, PX4 Sapog is an open source ESC design which you can get familiar with right here: kb.zubax.com/x/cYAh. Over the last months, the following noteworthy things happened to the project:

  • Proper documentation has finally been written: meet the Sapog Reference Manual. Feel free to contribute on Github.
  • The firmware has obtained a much more advanced spin-up algorithm (the new one is now documented in the Reference Manual).
  • After a brief interruption, Zubax Orel 20, which are Sapog-based ESC (pictured), are back in stock at Titan Elite.

I'd like to use this opportunity to remind users about the vices of believing the current capability characteristics stated in marketing materials of certain vendors of low-cost ESC. The issue was somewhat explained in our older post here, and here's a TL;DR: many of the widely used low-cost ESC tend to be unable to achieve the stated performance characteristics. Not ours, no sir.

What's next?

2%20Top%20view%20from%20the%20interface%20connectors.jpg?width=300The past few years have been spent working on a brand-new motor control solution which is intended to go much further than a simple ESC for a light UAV. Meet Télega - a completely new PMSM controller which incorporates several groundbreaking improvements which open new horizons for low-cost electric drives. Télega allows you to take virtually any existing low-cost electric drive, replace the existing legacy ESC in it with a Telega-based one, and gain 15% to 30% longer flight time as a result.

The teaser pic on the right shows the first motor controller design that is based on Telega, which we call Myxa. While the project is not really market-ready yet, we're looking for testers who are willing to work with us to weed out the remaining corner cases in exchange for certain benefits. Those who might be interested, please write us (or stop by our new lab in Tallinn, we have cookies).

Speaking of UAVs

Heart disease remains the No. 1 global cause of death with 17.3 million deaths each year, according to “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics — 2015 Update: A Report From the American Heart Association.” That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030, the report found.

A minuscule number of these patients get defibrillation in-time and survive. The time between the cardiac arrest and defibrillation of the patient is the most crucial factor for achieving higher survival rates.

aed_1.jpg?width=500

FlyPulse, a Sweden based company, is building the next-generation technology, based on their specially-designed drones, to address this challenge. LifeDrone AED is a transportation drone, equipped with an automated external defibrillator (AED) — a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy.

“FlyPulse develops, sells and provide services with LifeDrone AED to medical and rescue service providers. Our system can improve the survival rate for people with cardiac arrest, where it is difficult to arrive with an AED in time with ambulances or other transportation,”  explains Sebastian Wallman, Co-Founder and CEO of FlyPulse.

To reach their goal, FlyPulse needs to build and integrate a number of complex technologies. This includes the mechanical drone system, it’s payload, electronics, and the software to manage complete operations, with a high level of automation. Of course, they have to build a viable business model around this technology and make sure that the technology addresses the requirements of all key stakeholders.

Software plays a critical role in the success of this application. They need to integrate the following major modules:

  • Flight control and safety
  • Payload management
  • Cloud connectivity for remote telemetry and control
  • Fleet management through a centralized dashboard
  • Live video streaming for situational awareness and remote patient monitoring
  • Collision avoidance and airspace management
  • Integration with first responders’ applications, emergency help lines, messaging platforms
  • Authentication, security and fail-safe management
  • Custom user and operator mobile/web apps with status updates

After careful evaluation of their options, FlyPulse decided to partner with FlytBase, and leverage its products and expertise, to accelerate their drone application development.

Sebastian Wallman, CEO of FlyPulse, is excited to announce the partnership, “we get a very fast pace in our development with the help of FlytBase team and their products. Partnership with companies like FlytBase gives us the development speed we need.”

FlytBase offers the world’s most advanced drone software development platform, with “intelligence” and “connectivity” as its core features.

FlytOS, its operating system for drones is compatible with the widest range of drones and computer hardware platforms. This enables developers to make their applications agnostic to hardware. It provides a number of other capabilities, like, navigation and control, computer vision, payload management, authentication and security, machine learning, a simulator for testing, SDKs for web/mobile.

FlytBase Cloud
extends a number of these capabilities to the cloud. It helps developers manage large fleets of drones, connect over wifi/4G networks, and easily integrate drones with other business applications.

FlytBase has deep expertise in drone technology and has won numbers of startup awards for their innovation in product and business. They recently graduated from the Cisco Launchpad Accelerator program. Their team of experts has an extensive background in Aerospace, Computer Science, and Robotics.

Sebastian comments, “very positive, helpful and skilled team. This is one of the most important reasons why we want to work with FlytBase.”

Nitin Gupta, CEO of FlytBase, adds, “FlytBase provides all the critical building-blocks to assist in quick assembly of complex drone applications. We look forward to working closely with FlyPulse team to help them build a successful professional product in the shortest possible time.”

Guidelines for building drones for shows

3689720929?profile=original

Hi, guys,

As some of you who follow us may know, for some time now already we have been offering an extension to UgCS mission planning software - UgCS DDC (Drone Dance Controller). UgCS DDC has been crafted from the ground-up with drone shows in mind and offers users the ability to simultaneously control dozens of drones in a synchronised manner.

Despite UgCS DDC (https://www.ugcs.com/en/page/ddc) being commercial software, it relies on ArduCopter platform and almost all of the ArduPilot ecosystem.

For UgCS DDC testing purposes we are operating a small fleet of 25 "show" drones running ArduCopter - all equipped with RTK GPS units, RGB LED modules and a Wi-Fi adapter. We have made everything required to replicate our drones public on GitHub. This includes assembly instructions, specifications, schematics as well as information on setting up Wi-Fi modules and even an ArduCopter 3.5 fork, optimised for RTK GPS receivers.

We hope it will be useful to those of you interested in formation/swarm flights or drone shows.

Here are the GitHub links:

https://github.com/ugcs/ddc/tree/master/DDC - contains manuals regarding the setup and use of UgCS DDC software

https://github.com/ugcs/ddc/tree/master/Drone - guidelines for drone assembly, including mounting and setup of RTK GPS units

https://github.com/ugcs/ddc/tree/master/LED - contains the schematics and bill of materials for building LED modules that are used in drone shows

https://github.com/ugcs/ddc/tree/master/WiFi - information regarding setting up Wi-Fi modules which enable simultaneous communication between the drones and the ground station

https://github.com/ugcs/Ardupilot - ArduCopter 3.5 fork, optimised for working with RTK GPS receivers

https://github.com/ugcs/MissionPlanner - Mission Planner with slight modifications - added RTCM messages Broadcast over UDP function for RTK GPS. We will use this until we integrate the same functionality inside of DDC.

If you have any questions or ideas for improvement, please do not hesitate to reach out to us either here on DIY Drones or via our e-mail - ugcs@ugcs.com

Good luck and safe flights,

UgCS Team

Different use of watchX in UAV Systems

3689720745?profile=original

Hello Dear DIY DRONES Community.

I am a long term fan of DIY DRONES and wanted pass on something new that could be a nice fit as a blog post. Me and my friend Enes(You can remember him from an excellent drawing of APM at GRABCAD)  working on UAVs for a long time now. Recently we come up with an idea of Arduino compatible wrist watch called watchX. it's an easy hackable development board that you can use in everyday life.

3689720868?profile=original

There are many usages of watchX besides being a daily watch. Initially, we wanted to have flight critic information on our wrist. Then, we removed the strap of watchX and designed a case to mount the PCB of the watch to Turnigy 9x. It was easy to draw a case since we are providing the 3D step model of watchX.  We needed a second board that communicates with the FPV Raptor via Mavlink and provide us the information like battery voltage, altitude, speed, current mode and artificial horizon. It still needs a lot of tuning and debugging. Please let us know what you think about it?

Also currently we are running a crowdfunding Campaign on Indiegogo.

Technidrone, Spanish drone manufacturer company, has put on the market MAPKER multicopter, the first compact drone of high autonomy for photogrammetric applications.

3689720838?profile=original

This equipment has been designed to cover the needs of drones of this type and size, since the current equipments does not usually exceed 20 minutes of autonomy. The Mapker has an autonomy of 55 minutes, surpassing the existing options in the market. This autonomy has been possible thanks to the reduced weight of the equipment, which has been achieved using additive manufacturing and composites of great lightness.

In this way, it is possible to cover areas up to 100-120 hectares in a single flight, with a resolution of 1-3 centimeters, something unthinkable until now with a multirotor equipment.

The main objective of this equipment is to perform photogrammetric flights for the capture of information for different professional fields such as agriculture, mining, thermography, .... Highlights its ease of use, since it allows to realize totally autonomous flights, concept denominated like 'click and fly'.

3689720722?profile=original

Its versatility allows to change the sensors with great ease, adapting to the needs of each project, being able to integrate sensors of different characteristics like RGB, thermal, multispectral, ...

Its small dimensions (470 x 470 x 270 mm) and light weight of 3.5 kg, makes it very easy to transport compared to the current systems of high autonomy, since these have large dimensions and weight.

3689720733?profile=original

For jobs that require high accuracy, it has an optional GNSS system that is based on the PPK system to achieve this centimetric accuracy needed in many projects.

I know that selling here is probably frowned upon but I'm not sure eBay folks are up on this bird (since I have seen none for sale there) so I thought I would let this community have a crack at it first due to advanced knowledge of these systems. Message me with offer. This is running on QGroundControl and X8R. No radio. Set up file for Taranis can be emailed. Never flown but setup and working. May need fine tuning for hover and such. Thanks.

Almost a year ago, I posted here about how VR technology could help control and perform research on UAVs in an indoor environment and at a more affordable cost. Currently, the most advanced indoor UAV research lab in the USA and Switzerland are using camera-based motion capture systems. Unfortunately, those systems cost tens of thousands of dollars, require calibration, and are not very portable. I think the lack of availability of motion capture equipment is a factor significantly limiting UAV research and development.

My team and I are now releasing the Otus Tracker, a motion capture system and software package designed specifically for indoor UAVs and robots! The Otus Tracker has similar capabilities to camera-based motion capture, but is 5-10 times cheaper, portable, and does not require calibration.

The Otus Tracker and the RCbenchmark tracking lab have the following characteristics at launch:

  • Sub-millimeter accuracy tracking

  • 250 Hz refresh rate

  • Very low latency (<5 ms)

  • 5 m x 5 m x 5 m tracking area

  • Plugins for C, C++, ROS, Matlab, LabView and Python. You can also code your own plugins in other languages that support UDP communication.

  • Control code examples (including the code for the demo in the launch video)

Controlling a drone is hard. You need infrastructure to make it work. We hope that with the Otus Tracker, software, and examples we provide, we are significantly lowering the financial and technical barrier needed to develop and do research with UAVs, whether it is in SLAM, artificial intelligence, control, or swarm. We are planning to add to our documentation to help new researchers get started with UAV development.

rcbenchmark-otus-tracker-in-the-box.jpg

The Otus tracker is developed by the same team that worked on RCBenchmark’s motor testing tools: the Series 1580 (5 kgf) and the upcoming Series 1780 (25 kgf). Our dynamometers are used by hundreds of hobbyists, businesses and universities worldwide. I think we have quite a unique position in the UAV industry, as we have worked with many of the important players. Based on their feedback and the fact that measuring the position and orientation of a drone was one of our biggest problems when we developed UAVs (the other problem being measurement of thrust and motor efficiency), we decided to develop the Otus Tracker.

The tracker is shipping now! Please let me know if you have questions in the comments, or contact our team at info@rcbenchmark.com.
