Profile Information

About Me:
I am a mechanical engineer with a strong background in aerospace design. I love unmanned systems for the level of cutting edge design and technology that goes into them and the amazing, world shaping things that they can do.
Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest
I am looking to learn more about the UAV community, practice and maybe teach about UAV design, and eventually to produce some of my own designs.

Howdy Tyler, I sold the APMs already but I will have another one that I will be retireing when I swap it out for the Pixhawk, I'll email you for first dibs but I don't know when that will be.

"I'm interested in the 3DR version if it's still available, can pay via paypal, shipping to San Diego, 92024. Tried to PM, but we have to be official friends first :)"

"Holy cow - that ground vehicle! A 3D LIDAR, a 2D LIDAR, an enormous cooled hyperspectral camera, a 2D Radar, DGPS, full autonomy and data blending and object tracking and avoidance. That is a hell of a (expensive) monster! And they have multiples!…"

Tyler McGahee replied to joppe de kort's discussion hexacopter setup/parts! What do you think?
"That's a really big, power hungry setup for carrying around a go pro. Even with two 3S 5AH, you're only getting an estimated 5 minutes of mixed flight time."

"Hey, saw that you're in SoCal. We have a local SD Drone group that flies at least once a week, and then we have monthly meetings and discussions and what not. We also collaborate with the local FAB LAB, so there's access to a laser cutter,…"

Tyler McGahee commented on Jose Luis Cortes's blog post Probably the smallest arducopter frame?
"I made a mistake about the CoG issue. John is right - the height from the propeller plane to the CoG does not affect the pitch and roll moments, and, since unfixed bodies rotate about their center of gravity, the CoG location does not directly give…"

Tyler McGahee commented on Jose Luis Cortes's blog post Probably the smallest arducopter frame?
"Delrin warps a lot when machining deep, wide pockets (relative to the wall thickness). I'd recommend machining it from polycarbonate. Printing it is a good (but more expensive) option as well. I agree that you should try for narrower, faired…"

"Oh, you're talking about throttling the IC engine up and down. I just assumed you weren't, because, frankly, it's very inefficient. 1 kg of fuel has 46 MJ of extractable energy. An IC engine throttling up and down has an average…"

Tyler McGahee commented on Armen Poghosov's blog post Gas+electric hybrid multi-copters ...
"@Armen Well, I saw that diagram. You realize that mechanically, that doesn't function like you want it to, right? If your gas engine is driving your propellers at 3000 rpm, and your electric motors try to spin at 4000 rpm, it's not going…"

Tyler McGahee commented on Armen Poghosov's blog post Gas+electric hybrid multi-copters ...
"Uh, thanks for the laugh? An IC engine running a peak efficiency (100% load and whatever rpm maximizes efficiency) is exactly what a generator is, and is exactly what is being proposed here. No one is saying that you're throttling, so…"

Tyler McGahee commented on Armen Poghosov's blog post Gas+electric hybrid multi-copters ...
"I'm not sure, but I get the impression that some of you are misunderstanding the design. The idea is to run an engine into a drive system that spins the bottoms of the (presumably small, weak) electric motors, and then use the battery packs to…"
