Could I use ALT-HOLD for under 10m lift offs i.e. place the copter on the ground and push the throttle stick up.

I am testing the arducopter for the first flight and all is well with arming the motors with Dx8 and seemed to be ok.

I throttle the motors and after a few trials, suddenly the throttle lost steam and the power to motors diminished and some stop.
Is this the sign of low quad lipo battery?
And if so, why the power loss is uneven.
