About Me:

Started with AR.Drone 1.0. Got tired of iPhone/iPad control and converted it to RC (MiruMod). Then built a Y6 and am now refining it as a camera platform. Now transitioning into traditional helis for aerial photography. Software developer by trade. Fixed-wing Pilot (lapsed).

Brian McGrath replied to Tony Kenward's discussion new APM flavor released: APM Mini Pro
"I never tried to figure them out. I just got one of these and it made it simple: HK external LED module

Blinking Red = Disarmed
Blinking Blue = No GPS Lock
Solid Red = Armed
Solid Blue = GPS 3D Lock

In the absence of telemetry, it's all you really…"

Brian McGrath replied to Tony Kenward's discussion new APM flavor released: APM Mini Pro
"Thanks for the updates! Mine is in the process of clearing customs and should be here within the week. I'm looking forward to getting it into the quad and getting back in the air now that the good flying weather is here."

Brian McGrath replied to Damo's discussion Taranis X8R Bind in ArduCopter User Group
"You need one of these: http://www.alofthobbies.com/frsky-sbus-converter.html

It works fine for me. Ch1-8 on CPPM for the APM and ch9-16 on the X8R PWM pins for whatever else you want to install.
Check this video. He covers a number of…"

"I saw those pads and wondered how to use them. Thanks for the information. What site did you find this on? It seems to have more specific info than I've been able to find elsewhere."

Brian McGrath replied to Tony Kenward's discussion new APM flavor released: APM Mini Pro
"I opened a ticket with the Help Desk at SDSHobby.com to have them ask the manufacturer about the PPM IN feature. The mfg reported that they had not tested PPM IN on the APM-Pro Mini, but SDS reports a number of their customers have used the standard…"

Brian McGrath replied to Tony Kenward's discussion new APM flavor released: APM Mini Pro
"OK now, that is an exceedingly slick piece of tech and has been added to my HK wish list! Great find and thanks for sharing!
Regarding the APM Mini Pro, I suppose, for that kind of money, one could just get one and test out the known options while…"

Brian McGrath replied to Tony Kenward's discussion new APM flavor released: APM Mini Pro
"Has anyone actually got their hands on one of these yet? The documentation (limited, but still, a document in english) indicates it will accept PPM IN on CH5. A few of the photos online show some jumper pads/cut-able traces labeled "PPM" which would…"

Brian McGrath commented on John Githens's blog post Multirotor used near Vancouver International Airport and Vancouver Harbour
"The video was shot 5 months ago, but the press seems to have just become aware of the video in the last day or so (see his discussion page). This may become his 42 seconds of fame."

"Robert, thanks for the encouragement and the update on 3.2.
My HK 450ProV2 FBL (and associated bits) is sitting in Vancouver clearing customs as we speak (type?) and I've got the Pixhawk+GPS sitting on my desk waiting for it all to arrive. I'm…"

"Denny, you are, of course, entitled to go in whatever direction you think best, but suggesting that ArduPlane and ArduCopter "seems to have far better people working on it" is entirely without basis. The developers for Traditional Heli are highly…"

Brian McGrath commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Ohio drone user charged for obstructing an accident scene
"Just my two cents, but I suspect that this person has some history with the local authorities that factors into the story.

It is unlikely that he just happened upon this accident scene prior to the arrival of the medevac helicopter with a $4000…"

"Denny, I also have a new Pixhawk sitting on my desk, but the heli that it's going to go in is sitting in Singapore waiting to be shipped. If I get started before you, I'll keep you posted on progress and results. If you go first, I'd love to hear…"

Brian McGrath replied to Monroe Lee King Jr's discussion Total noob to traditional heli!
"Robert and Xin,

Having the servos running in very close proximity to the APM, but not connected to the APM (i.e. running on a separate power and signal source) produces no interference. It only seems to create a problem when the servo is directly…"

Brian McGrath replied to Monroe Lee King Jr's discussion Total noob to traditional heli!
"I re-did the testing of the S306G servos and I was mistaken in my initial conclusions. If the servo is connected to the APM, the GPS performance drops off immediately. It loses satellites and the HDOP goes through the roof. Disconnecting the servo…"
