About Me:

I am an economist with a special interest in food security and agricultural productivity enhancement. I've also worked as a Business Analyst and Systems Analyst and I designed a niche governmental performance system. In my spare time I enjoy hang gliding and, when I'd rather not fly myself, I fly one of my RC planes or multicopters.

Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest

UAVs are a very exciting area to me, not least because they are cutting-edge, combine aviation, development and analysis. In Africa, starvation is all too real and I see UAVs as a cost-effective way of enhancing agricultural productivity. Besides their role in helping to obtain high resolution multi-spectral imagery, UAVs can also assist with land mapping, which can contribute to optimum land use policy. In September 2014 we launched our agricultural drone: http://www.agridrone.co

John Stuart replied to andresiko's discussion trigger a camera shorting 2 wires via pixhawk
"Have you checked this guy's products out? He has two that are soldered to the shutter button, one with focus and shutter, the other with just shutter. Also an IR option but that has too much latency I guess:…"

John Stuart commented on Colin Snow's blog post CropLife Survey: 87% of Ag dealers using UAVs are not generating a profit or don't know
"Maybe multi-spectral ag products from drones are under threat from satellites, but not basic hi-res crop scouting, live video surveillance of livestock, inspection (eg drainage) and security applications. Those products have a bright future."

John Stuart commented on Christiaan van Vollenstee's blog post South Africa signs new drone rules into law
"Just picked up from Hennie Kieser's interview on Jacaranda FM: cost for licenses are expected to run to R150 000 (about $12000) as CAA expects to charge R600 per hour while vetting our documentation. Are we all still thrilled about these new…"

John Stuart commented on Christiaan van Vollenstee's blog post South Africa signs new drone rules into law
"Compare these regulations with those of Canada, the UK or Australia - they are significantly more draconian. Do you know you'll need annual audits, license renewals (biennial in the case of the RPL), four different certifications/licenses including…"

"Hi Alexander, thanks for the feedback. I generally don't make 4 band composites but I have attached the NRGs for the relevant areas of the images. Hope they can be of use.

John Stuart replied to John Stuart's discussion Drone NDVI for Plant Nutrition Testing in Agricultural UAVs
"Hi John Our policy has always been results-based. Not taking anything away from other folks with more extensive methods, but if our work can yield credible, verifiable results, we prefer to keep it simple. Flying at 50m there is no atmospheric light…"
