APM as a flight data recorder

Posted on February 11, 2014 at 1:00am 23 Comments

We tried using an APM 2.5 as a flight data recorder in a Cessna 208B. It was built into a 3D printed box with own power supply and recording done on a mobile phone.

There is one problem though: When the aircraft is in a steady bank the APM HUD indicates horizontal attitude as the resultant g-load is…

Hi Murray, I am a newbie to multirotor stuff. I was wondering if I could buy a frame kit of your folding quad.-Malan

Hi Malan,

I might be able to put something together. Is it for 15" props? And with the electronics box, foam underneath and removable camera mount?

Hi Murray,
Thank you! I have a turnigy talon V2 set-up with extended booms (14mm X 320mm), 360kv RC timer motors, and 17.5" props. This set-up although flies longer than 30mins is a pain to transport.
I was hoping to transfer these components to your frame.
It'll be great if you can make the center plates for me scaled so that there is space to fit hobbyking quattro ESC (70X70mm) between the middle booms. Can you please make that for me? PM me with your details so I can paypal you.

Hi Malan,

Sorry, I'm a bit busy with year-end rush at the moment, but would still want to help you. My estimate is that I could have it done by around the 16th Dec. It will be with 70mm between middle tubes, but for the motor arms you have two options: 12mm square Aluminium tubes or 10mm carbon tubes with 12mm squares at ends.

Let me know what you prefer. I'm thinking of building one for myself with 17.5" props.

I estimate the cost will be $100 max.

Hi Murray,

I am new to Multicopters or indeed any type of radio controlled vehicle, but i have developed a keep interest into Multicopters. It just so happens that i am also from Pretoria.

I've been looking around but can't seem to locate a store which sells parts locally. Could you please give me the name of the store or website you source from? It really would be a great help

Thank you
