I am interested in UAV's for the purpose of Community Emergency Response. I am part of an extensive CERT organization in Northern California. Following a major earthquake, we need to put our limited people in areas of heaviest damage. Wondering if drones are a viable solution to quickly find areas of extensive damage and high victim concentration.
Jeff, I am a CERT instructor in Utah. I am building a hex copter (six bladed) with realtime FPV outfitted with a GPS and arduino nav sys. Although this setup is not unusual it's the application that is. The UAV will be used to assess damage and search for survivors after a disaster. So this is where the experimentation comes in, determining and documenting how a UAV should be used in different situations. In addition I have designed a six wheeled vehicle developed to be inserted in partially collapsed structures to look for survivors and deploy sensors to test for gas leaks, and smoke.
