Skywalker X8 hand injury

Posted on June 8, 2013 at 12:38am 55 Comments

Everytime i launch my X8 it's never any problems. That was until i mounted a bigger propeller. I went from 13x6 to 14x9.5 and my plane "suddenly" went out of my hand much faster than before! The result is a painful hand and a lot of thinking :) Maybe some of you guys should think twice before you hand launch…

Hi Tommy Larsen.

I'm needing help on my project.

Maybe if you go some time you can show me how to get thing to working

Tommy, I'm using webRTC for the video and ser2net to handle the telemetry. Ser2net is running tcp and webRTC is using UDP (of course).  I find webRTC to be faster and to have lower latency than GSTREAMER. It also seems to be more stable.

The downside to running webRTC is that you have to use a webRTC server.  But my son works for a company that uses a lot of Amazon server 'cycles' so that the extra that I use is very, very small in comparison.  So that connection is free for me.

Another upside to my technique is that I use a small uC (uChip PIC) that watches the serial data from both the Raspberry and a RFD900+ radio.  If the PIC detects a valid Mavlink packet on either line, it switches the appropriate source to the flight controller. So I can go back and forth between radio and 4G - at least in the air.  I'm working on two other items now - a change to Mission Planner that causes it to switch sources (COM vs. tcp) automatically WITHOUT reloading all parameters on connect.  The other thing is a "dongle" that takes PPM data from a receiver and converts that to USB so that I can use a regular joystick controller to feed into Mission Planner.  I don't like the Logitech game controller. The goal is to flip a switch on the Futaba (which changes the pulse width of an unused channel) and have that switch between the 2.4GHz link and the 4G one.

I live near some mountains where I like to fly (good pictures), and every once in awhile, there is no 4G.  Having it fail over quickly and seamlessly to radio is really handy (and vice versa).

Thank you Charles.

Do you have any Rpi code example to help me along the way?

I have my own server to install the system.

I am putting together a tutorial right now.  As you know, that takes a bit of time to get right. I should have it documented well enough to use in 4-5 days.

In the meantime, it is easier to contact me at -

Charles@Linquist.net

It should be obvious that I have some Scandinavian relatives myself!

As a "heads up", to get you thinking - I'm using

UV4L

webRTC

ser2net

autossh

wvdial

The appropriate drivers for the Novtel or Pantech dongles

A keyfile must be generated (copter SSH's into the server).

The server is doing a reverse SSH tunnel as well as hosting a webRTC service. Same network name, different ports.

I just finished building a gimbal for a modified (wide FOV) Raspberry pi 8MP camera.
