About Me:

I am a physics / chemistry major with 35 years in the electronics / robotics field. However, most of my work has been confined to repair of advanced electronic systems and CNC machines. My side interests have always included RC Helicopters and VTOL UAV's. I followed the Sourceforge "RC Autopilot Project" when it first came out and became very interested in the control of a private UAV Helicopter. I built my own circuit cards for that project and also integrated some of my own control features. The Arduino Mega has now peaked my interest so I have purchased this board to go to the next phase of my project. i currently have a "Quick 30" Helicopter fully outfitted with remote vidoe and long distance telemetry by methods of my own design. Eager to learn more.

Skip Frombach replied to Kate's discussion Collision avoidance of quadcopters
"I am currently investigating this and have a somewhat workable solution although I have not adapted it into current code.  Here is what I tried and it seems to work.  If you look on the internet you will find a discussion of a small ground based…"

Skip Frombach replied to Peter DG's discussion Arducopter horizon does not level
"I saw this as well when I attached the new board.  My thought was to put an adjustment platform under the circuit boards so the artificial horizon could be leveled out.  Much in the way a Telescope mirror is mounted on adjustable springs.  That…"

Skip Frombach replied to Andrew Chapman's discussion DIY Drones logo - inappropriate?
"I am sorry but I disagree with you folks. I have been in the Model Airplane hobby for over 45 years now and have seen many changes.  The same with the America I once knew.  There is really nothing wrong with having a Predator Drone as the Logo for…"

Hi Everyone,                  It's been a while since I have contributed to the forum.  I have been spending quite a bit of time working bugs out of my Tricopter build but have learned much in the process.  What I wanted to share with you was my…

"Look at the electronics supplier called Digi-Key.  You can purchase circuit repair pads from them.  It takes a magnifier to do the work sometimes.  Especially with surface mount technology but it can be done.  These electronic suppliers usually call…"

Skip Frombach replied to Paul Mather's discussion HappyKillmore's Ground Control Station
"I am having big problems getting your ground station to work for me.  I have purchased the entire APM system with Oilpan IMU and MediTek GPS.  I have flash updated the Media Tek GPS, Reset the GPS after it obtained its own lock and I still can't get…"

Skip Frombach replied to Jaime Felipe's discussion Ardupilot Mega stopped working after 5 minutes of use
"I would purchase some solder wick and go over the egde pin connections with it and a soldering iron. You have some pretty large solder joints on those pins and it could be that you are overlooking a short there. Also, some of them look like they are…"

Skip Frombach replied to bigkahuna's discussion "Auto" head, pitch, and roll using ArduPilot?
"Here is another idea to consider on a underwater ROV. The GPS signal can be recieved to a surface vessel and sonar waves can travel to and from an ROV. You could use a system similar to that used by GPS and create your own water bourn grid of…"

After successfully getting the EM-406a to parse out data over the SiRf simulation software I attempted to use the standard GPS parsing code for the Adafruit GPS Logger Shield to send data over the serial inputs of an Arduino Mega.  Obviously…

Skip Frombach replied to bigkahuna's discussion "Auto" head, pitch, and roll using ArduPilot?
"Hello,
There may be some interesting options to consider for a project of this type. GPS is based on a time signal from sattelites to a handheld real time clock. The shift in this signal between three points is what gives you your coordinates. What…"

Skip Frombach replied to Franjo Žilić's discussion Larger VTOL UAV
"Hello Franjo,
Some options exist for extended duration flight but I think you may run into a snag with 4 hours of flight. When I considered the construction of my UAV system I was looking for the same things. I came up with several ideas that seemed…"

Skip Frombach replied to roksraka's discussion Where to get started with UAV helicopters?
"Hello,
RC helicopters can be many things but the one thing most will agree on is that they can be very difficult to fly. Even more so; expensive to crash. But they can also be quite rewarding to master. Here are some of my suggestions to you:

#1.…"

Skip Frombach replied to JAYDEEP GHOSE's discussion AUTONOMOUS ROBOT HELICOPTER
"Hello Jaydeep,
There are many methods out there to get into the field of robotic copters. Most are based on some form of GPS control and waypoint flying also usig a Co-Pilot infra red stability, accellerometers and gyro based IMU. Various designs…"
